Lock Carlo Del Fava will miss Italy's Six Nations match with England here on Sunday after injuring his right knee in training, the Italian Rugby Federation said on Wednesday.
The Viadana player, who has won 42 caps, will need to undergo an operation after sustaining cartilage damage in the joint and will be out for at least four weeks.
Del Fava played in the 11-29 Six Nations opener loss to Ireland in Dublin last Saturday.
He will be replaced in the squad by former skipper Marco Bortolami of Gloucester.
